  • Money Wise Renovation Tips

It seems like we all like to renovate at some point in time. And why not! It can be a lot of fun and definitely the end product can be very rewarding.

Updating or adding kitchen and bath tiles can add real bang for your buck.

You can save a ton of cash with budget-friendly tiles used in a creative way. Consider a herring-bone design for example rather than a traditional brick pattern. Or, use the expensive tiles you want sparingly to create a trim detail or a feature area behind the cooktop rather than being forced to tile the entire expanse of a backsplash. You'll be pleased with the money you save and the look you get.

There are a lot of good and affordable options out there so don't be afraid to shop around and have a look at what you can pick up at many of the great shops on the island.

With the PEI Home Show coming up March 9-11 you'll be sure to find something there to put you in the renovation mood. So, don't let the weather get you down. Think of a renovation project you'd like to tackle before the summer and just do it! Me, I'm going to de-clutter my basement....again :-)

  • February 14, 2012

Well, here it is Valentine's Day.

Lucky me I got to enjoy it with my husband Mel and our 10 year old standard poodle Bob.

I hope everyone had a great day and now that I think of it, why don't we try and make every day special.

And, every once in awhile surprise someone with something a little extra special. How fun can that be.

  • Ready, Set, Move!

Most buyers, especially first-time homebuyers, agree that finding a property in "move-in ready" condition is important to them. So, sellers, it's time to roll up your sleeves and get to work. Making your home move-in ready doesn't necessarily mean doing costly kitchen and bath renovations. It does mean addressing safety issues, as well as performing maintenance tasks, both minor (such as fixing leaky faucets and drawers that stick) and major (like fixing faulty appliances or problems with your heating/cooling system). To that end, consider having your home professionally inspected before it goes on market; the inspection report can serve as your to-do list, ensuring your property is all fixed up — not a fixer-upper. Getting your home in move-in condition also means making sure it's thoroughly clean and neutral in décor. Ideally, buyers want to be able to move into a property where they can apply their personal touch without having to first remove yours. In other words, your décor should be a blank canvas — so give your walls a fresh coat of paint in a neutral tone, and, if not already a neutral shade, replace your carpeting, too. Just as buyers want a move-in ready home, you want top dollar for your property. So, while putting work and money into your home only to turn around and sell it might seem counterproductive, doing so will help to justify a higher asking price than you could set for your home if it required more work on behalf of its new owners.

  • The Telephone

This month marks the anniversary of the very first telephone conversation. The conversation was between Alexander Graham Bell and his assistant, Mr. Watson. Apparently, while Mr. Bell was working on his invention, he spilled acid on himself and, without thinking, picked up the gadget in front of him and yelled, "Mr. Watson, come here. I want you!"

What a great story! And it's true too!

I would welcome a call from you or a friend needing real estate assistance that says, "I want you!"

I'm always available to answer any questions you may have about real estate Smile

Keep well and make it a great day!

    Movember

Changing the Face of Men's Health

During November each year Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on 1000's of mens faces in Canada and across the world.

With their "Mo's" these men raise funds and awareness for men's health, specifically prostate cancer.

Our own Re/Max guy's are taking part and shredding their facial hair to fashion fabulous new moustaches in support for this cause.  Keep up the good work, and we are proud to offer our support.

  • Control Heating Costs

Saving money never goes out of style, especially when it comes to home utility bills and many are already looking for ways to curtail energy costs this winter.

Heat transfer - warm air from inside your home escaping to the outdoors - is the main culprit that drives up winter energy bills.  Fortunately, a simple decor change can help reduce your home's heating costs this winter.

Installing the right kind of window shade is a tactic that can reap significant savings, especially if you opt for cellular shades.  More energy efficient than regular shades, cellular shades help to insulate windows by forming a barrier that eliminates air flow.  Look for a cellular shade with an additional layer of insulation hidden inide the cellular structure as it is the most energy efficient.  The additional insulation also increases the energy efficiency on sheer and light filtering fabrics.  Shades are available in various colour and fabrics allowing them to fit perfectly with your decor. Big Smile

  • Routine Fall Maintenance

The season has changed once again and we are now in undoubtably the most beautiful season of the year, Fall, my very favourite. Still nice and warm sunny days and the bounty of the summer gardens to enjoy...Especially the tomatos. The cherry tomatos I planted in June are sweet and juicy and the Farmer's Market is a veritable smorgasboard of organic fresh produce. We are so lucky to live here!

With this autumn season, there are a few routine home maintenance items you should take care of before winter comes.

    • If you use a wood burning fireplace, get your chimney cleaned and inspected.
    • Take a look up on your roof for broken, misplaced or missing shingles and repair as necessary.
    • Clean your eavestroughs.  There are special tools available that enable you to attend to your eavestroughs whilst you have your feet firmly on the ground.
    • Replace any worn weather stripping around your doors and windows.
    • Test smoke and carbon monoxide destectors.  Replace the batteries and clean the covers to ensure they stay in perfect working order.
    • Replace your furnace filter.
    • Check for leaks around your hot water tank, toilets and under sinks. Early leak detection and repair can avoid costly repairs in the future.
  • PEI Election 2011

We are enjoying beautiful Fall weather during the 2011 Prince Edward Island election campaign. To find out more about whats happening on the island election trail, click www.electionspei.ca The election takes place on Monday September 3rd.

The front page of September 28, 2011 Globe and Mail shows a picture of Saudi women dressed in black robes called abayas carrying cameras and cell phones and the headline is

Modern lives, ancient rules. Their king hands the women of Saudi Arabia the right to vote, then two days later a woman is sentenced to 10 lashes with a whip. Her crime: She was caught driving a car.

Their votes may not have made a lot of difference in their lives but hopefully our votes do.
